Background of the Study
Phonological processes, which involve the systematic organization of sounds in speech, are evolving rapidly in digital spaces. TikTok, with its focus on short-form audio-visual content, provides a unique platform for the expression and transformation of phonological patterns among Nigerian users. This study investigates how TikTok audio trends influence phonological processes, including assimilation, elision, and intonation patterns. Nigerian TikTok users often adapt traditional phonological rules to suit the fast-paced, creative nature of digital content (Adedayo, 2023). The platform’s emphasis on auditory expression encourages experimentation with speech sounds, leading to innovative adaptations that reflect both regional linguistic diversity and contemporary digital trends. The study examines how these phonological innovations emerge, spread, and eventually integrate into everyday language use. Factors such as social influence, cultural identity, and technological affordances are considered in analyzing how digital media alters conventional phonological norms. By focusing on TikTok, the research aims to document and analyze the impact of digital audio on phonological evolution in Nigeria. The findings will contribute to our understanding of the interplay between digital media and spoken language, offering insights into how technology can shape linguistic identity (Olayinka, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
There is a significant gap in understanding how digital platforms, particularly TikTok, influence phonological processes in Nigeria. Despite TikTok’s growing popularity, little empirical research has addressed how its audio trends contribute to changes in phonological patterns. This shortfall hinders comprehensive linguistic analysis and limits insights into the broader impact of digital media on speech. The study aims to address this gap by exploring the phonological transformations exhibited in TikTok audio trends, thereby providing a clearer picture of digital phonological evolution (Bamidele, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze the phonological processes observed in TikTok audio trends in Nigeria.

  • To identify how digital media influences traditional phonological patterns.

  • To examine the spread and integration of digital phonological innovations in everyday language.

Research Questions

  • What phonological processes are evident in Nigerian TikTok audio trends?

  • How does TikTok influence traditional phonological patterns in Nigeria?

  • How are digital phonological innovations integrated into common speech practices?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insight into the role of TikTok in driving phonological innovation in Nigerian social media. The research offers valuable contributions to linguistics, digital media studies, and sociolinguistics by elucidating the impact of audio-based digital content on language evolution. It informs future research on the intersection of technology and phonology (Folarin, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to examining phonological processes in TikTok audio trends within Nigerian social media. It does not extend to other platforms or non-phonological aspects of language.

Definitions of Terms

  • Phonological Processes: Systematic patterns in the organization and production of speech sounds.

  • TikTok Audio Trends: Popular auditory expressions and speech patterns featured in TikTok videos.

  • Digital Media: Platforms and technologies used for electronic communication.
